Communicare in Southampton

A variety of neighbourly services are offered (subject to volunteer availability), but the one most in demand is befriending, where volunteers visit clients in their own homes or sometimes accompany them to a local café or some other social activity. Some volunteers provide practical help such as transport, shopping or DIY, and the amount of time offered varies greatly. As far as possible clients and volunteers are matched to the benefit of both. We cannot offer nursing or personal care.

Communicare is open 9am-5pm Monday to Friday.

We are based in Southampton Voluntary Services, though we maintain satellite offices in Shirley and Woolston twice a week.

Community Transport (SCA)

SCA’s Community Transport provides the door-to-door transport for members of their six wellbeing clubs.

They transport around 500 customers each week to their SCA Care wellbeing centre. Their drivers ensure they arrive in a timely, reliable and safe way. As well as their own wellbeing centres SCA Transport also provide transport on a regular basis for:

First Safe Journey Card

The First Safe Journey Cards has been designed specifically for our customers who may need some extra help to make their journey.

The card lets you tell the driver what extra help you may need to make your bus journey. This could include needing more time to reach your seat or you need the driver to speak up because you are hard of hearing. Whatever your need, you can use these cards to let the driver know in a private and discreet way – there are even blank spaces for you to fill in yourself for details of your destination or special instructions.

The Jumbulance Trust is an accessible travel charity that exists to make it possible for severely unwell or disabled persons to embark on holidays or day trips with the help of our ‘Jumbulance’ coaches.

The Jumbulances are available to hire by groups of people, including disability groups, care homes, hospices, schools, disability sports groups and other organisations.

Where can the Jumbulance travel to?

  • European destinations include Holland, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Euro Disney, Pilgrimage to Lourdes
  • Each year, with the help of specialist instructors and equipment, we take a group skiing to Niederau in Austria
  • UK holidays include the highlands of Scotland, Lake District, Norfolk, Blackpool, Wales and more.
  • Day trips to the seaside, safari parks, city sightseeing, shopping trips etc.

Living made easy is an impartial advice and information website about daily living equipment and other aspects of independent living.

It has been developed by the Disabled Living Foundation (DLF), a national charity with 40 years’ experience in providing independent advice about independent living for disabled adults and children, older people, their carers and families. DLF is a founder member of the Information Standard, a certification scheme for health and social care information.

Living made easy‘s core value is impartiality. They aim to provide comprehensive and independent information about daily living equipment available to the public from national suppliers. This product information is supported by expert advice created by their team of occupational therapists.

We provide short-term loans of mobility aids to people in need, including wheelchairs, commodes, walking sticks and frames.

You can either collect equipment or, in some cases, have it delivered for a small fee. We also stock new and reconditioned items for sale – please contact us for more information.

British Legion: for the Armed Forces Community

The Royal British Legion provides lifelong support for the Armed Forces community – serving men and women, veterans, and their families.


If you need help getting around then the Legion may be able to provide an electrically powered mobility vehicle, scooter, or buggy.


The Legion’s EPV scheme is available to any Legion beneficiary who has a genuine need for one of our vehicles.

Before you apply for the scheme you should check whether you are eligible for Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Armed Forces Independent Payment (AFIP), or Disability Living Allowance (DLA) mobility component to help fund your mobility needs.

You may also be able to use your PIP, AFIP, or DLA mobility component to get a car or mobility vehicle as part of the Motability scheme.

The Legion’s Veterans Mobility Fund can assist veterans who have a Service-related serious physical injury who fall outside the MOD provision for wheelchairs or whose warranty has expired. Find out about VMF more here.

To support mobility within the home, we also offer advice and support to receive grants and funding for home adaptations.

Wheelchair supply via the local authority

Equipment to help you live more independently and safely at home is provided on behalf of the council and NHS by Southampton Community Equipment Service (CES).

The service is able to deliver equipment to your home and collect it again if you no longer need it. If you are able to, you can also visit the local depot to view and collect your equipment.
If you are in hospital, your needs will be assessed before you leave. If you would like to use the service, first you need to be assessed by a health or social care professional.

Hampshire Wheelchair Service

What service we provide
The service provides assessments for people with mobility and other postural problems, supplying wheelchairs, pressure care cushions and accessories for wheelchairs.

Assessments are held in a variety of locations e.g. clinic, at home, at a day centre or school.

How to refer into the service
Any qualified healthcare professional can refer to the service e.g. GP, district nurse, physiotherapist and occupational therapist.

All referrals will be looked at by one of our occupational therapists and prioritised according to the Hampshire Wheelchair Service specification and criteria.

This may result in direct prescription and supply of equipment to the client.

Alternatively a face-to-face assessment may be required, which may be held at a variety of locations.

Repairs, service and testing

Please contact Millbrook on 03332 408 335 and your call will be answered by a member of customer services who will arrange for a technician to come out if required.

Millbrook offers an out of hours repair service 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year for all essential items, e.g. hoists, dynamic pressure care mattresses, etc.

All electrical and lifting equipment requires an annual service/test. Millbrook has records of all equipment issued and will contact you near the due date to arrange a convenient time to visit and carry out the service.

All electrical equipment carries a label which displays the due date of the next test.  If you have not been contacted, and the due date has passed, please contact Millbrook on the number above to arrange a priority visit.

Returning equipment

There are three ways you can return your equipment, either:

  • tell your carer, social or healthcare professional, who will arrange with Millbrook to collect it.
  • or contact Millbrook directly on the number shown above. If you do this, Millbrook will sometimes contact your social or healthcare professional to confirm that collecting this piece of equipment is advisable.
  • or you can drop off the equipment directly to Millbrook’s depot at the address given above or your carer, social or healthcare professional can advise you of other locations to which the equipment can be taken.

The Motability Scheme enables disabled people to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair, using their Government funded mobility allowance . If you receive the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance, the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) , the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS) or the Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) you may be eligible to join the Motability Scheme.

The Motability Scheme provides a simple way to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair without the worry of owning and running one. Today, over 640,000 disabled people and their families benefit from the worry-free mobility available throughout the Scheme.
